Why We’re Reducing Free Storage from 1GB to 200MB

We’re making a change: The free storage limit for events is now 200MB (previously 1GB).
And we want to be transparent about why — and how it helps you avoid surprises on your special day.

🧪 The Real Purpose of the Free Plan

We created the free plan to let you try Chivent before committing — explore the features, test the upload flow, and see if it’s the right fit for your event.

That means:

  • Creating a preview of your event page
  • Uploading a few test photos or videos
  • Seeing how it feels for guests to contribute

But it was never meant for hosting an actual event day.

Still, with 1GB available, many hosts assumed it would be enough. Unfortunately, that often led to frustration…

🧠 What We Learned (The Hard Way)

  • Hosts would start using Chivent on the event day and run out of storage almost immediately
  • Guests couldn’t upload anything further and got an error that storage was full
  • Other users would upload real content, only to find it deleted after 7 days, as per the free plan’s auto-deletion policy
  • We received many recovery requests, but because of our strict privacy policy, we permanently delete files on free plans — with no way to recover them

The result? Disappointed hosts and lost memories.

“We didn’t know the limit was per event.”
“Guests stopped uploading halfway through.”
“Can you please recover the photos? They’re really important.”

These messages helped us realize something critical:
The free plan was causing confusion — and even harm.
